NSCDC, vigilance group clash in Ekiti, one hospitalised

Published by Tribune on Wed, 26 Sep 2012

One operative of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) was hospitalised on Wednesday while several other members of the organisation were injured in a fracas with a vigilance group in Ado Ekiti.Members of Vigillance Group of Nigeria had engaged the NSCDC operatives in a free for all, with sources claiming that the two groups freely used various weapons and charms on themselves in the melee. The violence caused tension in the Christ's School area of the town, where the vigilance group has its secretariat, as witnesses claimed that they brandished dangerous weapons like broken bottles, tear gas, cutlasses, charms, among others.According to the witnesses, two senior security personnel, who made attempts to broker peace between the groups, were caught in the middle and were allegedly assaulted and sustained injuries.Director of Operations of the vigilance group, Mr Yusuf Wasiu, while speaking on the incident, alleged that the NSCDC caused the attack, saying its operatives had invaded their office at about 10 a.m. on Wednesday.Wasiu further alleged that they had come with armed men in four buses. He claimed that his group had been branded 'illegal' by the NSCDC over the allegations that it had not registered with the Federal Government. He explained that NSCDC had summoned the Vigilance Group state commander, Mr Akin Olorunloni, to its Ekiti State command headquarters about three months ago and ordered him (commander) to stop his men from operating in the state unless they pay a sum of N10 million registration fee.
