Lagos traffic law enforcement officers to use camera

Published by Tribune on Wed, 26 Sep 2012

In its bid to ensure that prosecution of violators of traffic law become less controversial, there is plan by Lagos State government to equip those saddled with the responsibility of enforcing the law with camera to get pictorial evidences.Deputy Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Police Command, Mr Tunde Sobulo, had at a seminar organised for stakeholders, hinted that there was need for traffic law enforcement officers to have camera to make prosecution less cumbersome, as there may be need to use photographs to buttress points while prosecuting an offender. He stated that there could be cases where some offenders might want to prove stubborn, such cases may require pictorial evidence. For instance, some aspects of the law like a situation whereby somebody was arrested for eating on steering, such situation may require tendering of photographs as evidence in court, as the offender may deny committing such an offence.Community News findings revealed that some men of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) are already using camera to enhance their jobs. Some LASTMA men who spoke to Community News, confirmed that the new traffic law introduced by the state government has made it mandatory for the use of camera to make things less controversial."We cannot over emphasised the need for camera in our daily assignment. Our job is such that people are not always ready to admit that they are guilty, even when there are clear evidence that they have broken the law, so, one needs to go the extra miles to prove his case with the use of camera"Community News findings revealled that what the law enforcement officers do now is to take photographs of offenders while committing the act. For instance, if somebody was caught smoking on steering, the officer will ensure snapping his photograph while smoking on the wheel.
