LLTC refurbishes courts ahead of Williams' sisters' visit

Published by Guardian on Wed, 26 Sep 2012

THE Lagos Lawn Tennis Club (LLTC) has started giving its courts a facelift in preparation for the Williams sisters' (Venus and Serena) visit to the country next month.LLTC President, Sam Egbuchunam, told journalists at the club last weekend that his administration was determined to ensure that the courts met all international specifications to attract the best players from across the world to the club. The club would host the Williams sisters during the Lagos leg of their Africa tour next month. Egbuchunam said the club was looking at hosting several national and international tennis competitions to help Nigerian players and at the same time put the club on the world tennis map.'We deemed it fit to put in place our courts that have been dormant for long,' he said. 'Out of the nine tennis courts in the club, four has been lying fallow without usage, hence we decided to refurbish them and put them in proper use.'According to him, the club also needs the facilities in good condition because of the ongoing Chevron Junior tourney and the Governor's Cup, which will serve off next month.'These forthcoming international events prompted the refurbishment of our other courts. This is because the Williams sisters' visit is very important to the club as a whole, and for us as hosts, we want to make them feel at home when they visit the club.''Henceforth, the facilities will not be used for social events, but we would continue to leverage on multinational firms' support. Already, corporate bodies are jostling to use the facilities for their sports events, which will in turn change the modus operandi of the club after the proper refurbishment.
