How to ensure world peace

Published by Guardian on Wed, 26 Sep 2012

TO make peace in the world and ensure a sustainable future, two human rights groups, Women Advocates Research and Documentation Centre (WARDC) and West Africa Network for Peace Building (WANEP) have urged local resistance to all forms of violence. The groups made the call in Lagos at a seminar on 'Sustainable Peace for a Sustainable Future' to mark this year's International Peace Day in collaboration with Development and Peace (D&P).Emmanuela Azu of WARDC said everyone must contribute to peace building and spread the importance of peace in their communities, as the absence of violence would not necessarily translate to the presence of peace.According to her, the responsibility of sustaining peace is not resident in the government alone, but in the citizens as they are the major drivers of the economy and society.'The best way to sustain peace is to maintain a high level of inner peace which transcends beyond an individual to a larger group and society,' she said. The groups said every individual should explore alternative means of dispute resolution to express grievances and resolve dispute.'Since we have tried it from the top down and failed, it is time to try it from bottom to the top. For peace to reign, we need to go back to the basics to get it right.'Every individual needs to shun violence as the primary focus of a sustainable development plan is on building institutional structures that aim to support dialogue and even allocation/ distribution of resources rather than promoting violent expressions.'The groups noted that it was 'an indispensable fact that just, fair, equitable egalitarian and participatory governance will go a long way in sustaining development and peace in Nigeria and the world at large'.
