ACN rates Jonathan trainee president, decries silence on disasters

Published by Guardian on Wed, 26 Sep 2012

THE Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) yesterday hit hard atPresident Goodluck Jonathan, placing him among leaders in training.Citing the myriads of problems facing the country and the President's alleged poor response to them, ACN said it was in order to declare him a 'traineepresident.'In a statement the party issued in Ilorin through its National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, it asked: 'How else can one describe the administration's lack of capacity to be proactive or respond in a timely and robust manner to the recent catalogue of woes and national calamities''ACN argued that the persistence of the Boko Haram insurgency, resulting inmore deaths almost every day, the carnage on the nation's roads, policy somersault, and the slow and uncertain responses to national issues had depicted the Jonathan administration as a'government on internship.'Mohammed saidthe closure of the Lokoja AbujaHighway, which had cut off Abuja, the nation's capital due to flooding of roads and bridges along the ever-busy road showed decay in infrastructure and the incompetence of public officials entrusted to salvage them.ACN lamented that the President had neither not deemed it fit to comment on the incident, norhad there been anyvisit bya minister or any coordinated responseto the disaster from the Federal Government. The party claimed that on a weekend of multiple disasters such as the Lokoja flooding, the bomb blast in Bauchi, and the two weeks of non-stop flooding in the country, the President's handlersshowed more concern in informing Nigerians about Jonathan's trip to the United Nations (UN) General Assembly summit than explaining or proposing an organised 'response to these calamities.'By the President's action, ACN said it was clear that the welfare of Nigerians was certainly not a priorityto his government.'Otherwisewhy could the President not find time to visit even by helicopter the disaster zones to at least give hope to the victims or their relations.
