U-17 World Cup: Glo tasks Flamingoes on focus 'Dedevbo calls for calm

Published by Tribune on Thu, 27 Sep 2012

LEADING Telecoms Company, Globacom has tasked the Nigerian U-17 Women National team, the Flamingoes to remain focused as they aim to seal up their qualification ticket for the second round of the on-going FIFA U-17 World Cup in Azerbaijan. In a press statement in Lagos on Wednesday, the Company advised the team to go for the three points against Colombia in the last game of the group to boost their chances of qualifying as group leaders. The Flamingoes were held to a 1-1 draw by Canada in their first match."The Flamingoes must work hard to subdue hard fighting Colombians in order to consolidate their position in the group", the statement said. Globacom praised Flamingoes for their outstanding performance against the host, Azerbaijan during the last match played in Lankaran and expressed optimism that the team will excel in this competition if it maintains the steam. The Company also acknowledged and commended the determination of the team which resulted in its overwhelming 11- 0 victory over Azerbaijan. The on-going 2012 U-17 Women World holding in Azerbaijan will be rounded off on October 13.Globacom is the Major partner of Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) and official sponsor of the National teams.Meanwhile,FLAMINGOES' head coach, Peter Dedevbo, has called for calm after his side's whitewash the host team Azerbaijan, in the ongoing Fifa Under17 Women's World Cup.Nigeria's Flamingoes defeated their Azerbaijan counterparts 11-0 on Tuesday. But Dedevbo does not want the mauling of the hosts to "get into their heads" as they prepare to face Colombia in their last group game on Saturday.'When we arrived Azerbaijan for the tournament, I told my girls not to underrate any team. This can be seen in the way we approached each team and today's (Tuesday's) match.'I thank God and my girls for the victory, but we will not let this get into our heads. We will continue to apply the same tactics and approach to every game," said the Nigerian trainer after his side's win over Azerbaijan. This is the second time the Flamingoes have beaten the host nation of a FIFA tourney. In Trinidad and Tobago two years ago, it ended 2-1 in favour of Flamingoes. The Nigerians will leave Lankaran and fly back to Baku for their last preliminary game against Colombia as they seek to keep their top spot in Group A.Nigeria is currently top of Group A with four points and edges Canada to the top spot by virtue of a superior goals difference.
