Govt promises better funding for space technology development

AS part of efforts to ensure a better future for the country through the development of space technology, the Federal Government has promised better and continuous funding for the National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA).Minister of Information, Mr. Labaran Maku, while leading the good governance team on a national media tour of facilities at the Agency's Headquarters in Abuja, over the weekend, re-affirmed the decision of the Federal Government for the continuous funding of the Nigeria Space Programme. He described NASRDA as a pride to the African continent and strategic organization for the modern world.NASRDA's Deputy Director Media & Corporate Affairs, Felix Ale, in a press statement made available to The Guardian noted: 'Maku said President Goodluck Jonathan as a scientist is very much aware of the crucial roles and enormous contributions of science and technology, hence no stone will be left unturned in giving the sector a pride of place in the life of this administration.'Maku further explained that, between 1957 and now, a lot had been achieved in the area of Space Science and Technology, adding that, Nigeria cannot be an exception.He said for any nation to advance in the areas of communication, security and disaster management, it is imperative to give adequate attention to the Space Sector.While congratulating the leadership of the Agency for professional excellence, and good performance, the Minister said the Federal Government would continue to support the Agency in terms of training for capacity building and launching of satellites with higher resolutions.Maku expressed delight for what he saw at the NASRDA's Headquarters, saying the situation as it were symbolized the beginning of modernization for the country.The Minister emphasized that Nigeria as the most populous country in Africa, has a duty to herself, the continent and indeed the global community in the course of championing technological development.He said, as a nation, we should be able to look into the future with confidence, adding that, the best way to actualize this is through space science and technology.The team was conducted round the Agency's facilities by the Director of Planning, Mrs. Augusta Ihenacho, who stood in for the Director-General, Dr. Seidu Mohammed.itoring, assist with burgeoning urban planning demands and, through the development of engineering skills, will advance the growth of new technologies in Nigeria.
