Abductors seize seven in Edo, Ogun

Published by Guardian on Thu, 27 Sep 2012

ABDUCTORS have resumed their nefarious activities in Edo and Ogun States by abducting seven persons. Two of the latest victims are the principal of the University of Benin (UNIBEN) Demonstration Senior Secondary School (UDSSS), Mrs. Julie Oboite and the proprietor of City Hotel and Suites, Ijebu Ode, Ogun State, Chief Segun Oyebolu.Oboite was reportedly abducted on Monday night as she was driving into her compound at Ugbowo, Benin City.Besides, a principal of a yet to be established public secondary school in Aduwawa, a suburb of Benin City, simply identified as Mrs. Isibor was also reportedly abducted that same Monday. Two other persons, Uyi Oriabor, a staff of Okomu Oil company, and a medical doctor said to be a House Officer with the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH), were equally abducted on Monday. There is also the reported abduction of two children of a Benin City-based businessman, Juande Iyamu while they were being driven to school by a driver who was shot dead by the abductors when he tried to resist them.As at the time of filing this report yesterday, it was gathered that the abductors of Mrs. Oboite had demanded N20 million as ransom before she could be released, just as staff and students of the UDSSS yesterday held a peaceful demonstration to protest their principal's abduction.A family source told reporters that six armed gunmen stormed Oyebolu Ijebu-Ode's office at 8pm, forced him into a Toyota Camry, ash colour car and drove off.The source who spoke on the condition of anonymity disclosed that all Oyebolu's telephone lines had been switched off.Narrating how the operation took place, the source said: 'At about 8pm six heavily armed men in Toyota ash colour car stopped near his (Oyebolu) office. Two of them immediately rushed to his office while the other four stood by the car. Few minutes later those who went to kidnap him brought him and forced him into the car and quickly drove off'.He stated that since he was abducted all efforts to speak to him on his telephones had proved abortive, as the lines had been switched off, 'even though initially phones were ringing but nobody picked them'.Another family source however told The Guardian that the abductors yesterday at about 3pm, contacted the family and demanded for N400 million as ransom.
