Published by Guardian on Fri, 28 Sep 2012

WINNER of the 2011 Milo Secondary Schools Basketball Championship, Gen. Murtala Mohammed College, Yola, Adamawa State, departed the country on Wednesday for this year's Youthfit Africa U-17 Basketball Championship holding in Johannesburg, South Africa. The 20-man team is led by the Commissioner for Education, Gabriel Hamadama, as well as the Nigeria School Sports Federation (NSSF) team. According to a statement by the NSSF Secretary General, Olabisi Joseph, the team will compete with top teams in South Africa, who are also winners of their nation's tournament.According to the NSSF boss, Ibrahim Muhammad, the trip will afford the students the opportunity to interact with their counterparts and help them to hone their skills. Muhammad was particularly grateful to the management of Nestle Nigeria Plc for its unflinching support to schools sports in Nigeria. He urged other corporate bodies to take a cue from the company, saying: 'We want to thank Nestle for supporting the team and we hope that the students will make the country proud in South Africa.'Nestle, led by its Managing Director, Martin Woolnough, also hosted the members of the delegation before their departure and charged them to do the nation proud at the tournament. Brand Manager of Milo, Funmilayo Osineye, said: 'Remember that you are ambassadors of yourselves, Adamawa State and Nigeria.'I want you all to continue to imbibe the values you have learnt throughout the Milo Basketball Championship - discipline, team work and determination. Milo, the energy food drink of future champions, remains committed to the development of sports at the grassroots.'The brand will continue to prepare these champions to succeed in their greatest game ever ' the game of life.We wish you a successful outing.'And for Hamadama, 'it (the competition) is going to open them to external world and widen their scope. The experience will help to inspire their colleagues that with sports they can travel to anywhere in the world.'It is indeed a rare privilege for them and I believe they will represent the country very well in South Africa.
