NSSF thumbs up facilities for sports fiesta

Published by Guardian on Fri, 28 Sep 2012

AFTER inspecting facilities in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital, ahead of the forthcoming National School Sports Festival to be hosted by the state, President of the National School Sports Federation (NSSF), Ibrahim Mohammed, said he was impressed with what he saw in the Garden City.According to him, the state is ready to host the event that will see the convergence of students from the 36 states of the federation and the FCT for competition from October 11 to 21. However, he expressed concern about the lack of a committee to drive the festival to fruition. At this time that the whole world is turning to school sports as panacea against the dearth in talent, he said, host states must take the opportunity seriously. He decried the inability of the Rivers State Sports Commissioner, Fred Igwe, to put in place a working committee to ensure the success of the festival.'School sports the world over is the bedrock of grassroots sports development,' he noted. 'I have gone round the facilities earmarked for the festival and I want to say I am very impressed with what I have seen.''The newly constructed Adokie Amasiemaka Sports Complex, which also hosted the last National Sports Festival, is world class and I want to commend the Rivers State Government for putting in place such structure for posterity.'The Civic Centre and Liberation Stadium, where the opening and closing ceremonies will take place, is also okay.'Port Harcourt will host students from across the country and all states are expected to participate in 22 events, which include 17 scoring and five demonstration events.
