How To Deal With Labels

Published by Guardian on Sat, 29 Sep 2012

A LOT ofthings bought in thshops and markets come with labels stuck on them. These include glass, plastic, stainless steel, and even wooden materials. Removing sticky materials may not be easy sometimes; they may not peel easily or when they do they come off in bits. When they do not come off completely, they tend to deface the item. However, trying some of the simple methods below will prove helpful. For whatever method used, first test the cleaning or removal material in an inconspicuous part of the surface the label is stuck on to be sure it will not cause damage to that surface. Methods' Spray plastic wrap with a mixture of one part dishwashing liquid to five parts water. Lay the damp side down on top of the label for 10 minutes. When the plastic wrap is peeled off, the label comes with it.' Cover label with a cloth or sponge saturated with warm vinegar and let stand. When the label is saturated, it should peel off without scrapping or causing damage. Then rinse. Note that this method should be used only on washable surfaces and washable paint.' Vinegar can be used to remove price labels and other decals from glass, wood, and china. Paint the label or decal with several coats of white vinegar. Give the vinegar time to soak in and after several minutes the decal can be rubbed off.' To remove pesky stickers such as price tags, run a hot hair dryer over the sticker for 20 to 30 seconds and peel away. This should remove the sticker cleanly with no residue.' Finger nail polish remover will work to remove sticky labels. It can be used to remove price stickers on the bottom of shoes.' Eucalyptus oil is good for taking stickers off anything.' Remove sticky labels with anything greasy such as cooking oil, margarine, mayonnaise and peanut butter. Apply to the label or adhesive and allow to sit. Wipe off with window cleaner.' To remove the remains of sticky labels on glass, rub the glass with a cloth dipped in methylated spirits, or sprinkle on talc and gently rub off the glue with fingers.
