Flood Hits Communities, As Anambra, Bayelsa Govts Raise Concern

Published by Guardian on Sun, 30 Sep 2012

GOVERNOR Peter Obi of Anambra State has called on organisations, the federal government and the International Community to come to the aid of Anambra State, which, according to him, is worst affected by flood ravaging many parts of the country.Similarly, the Bayelsa State Government has expressed concern over the plight of flood-affected communities in the state.Speaking with newsmen shortly after visiting some of the communities in Sagbama and Kolokuma/Opokuma local government areas of the state, the Deputy Chief of Staff, Government House, Mr. Douye Diri, described the situation as a pathetic natural disaster and expressed optimism that government would do everything within the limits of available resources to alleviate the sufferings of victims.Governor Obi toured the affected local governments of Ayamelu, Ogbaru, Anambra West and Anambra East, yesterday. The governor, who cancelled his planned trip to Mexico tomorrow, had a hectic day accessing the affected areas in a canoe.According to him, it is only a man devoid of feelings for his people that would travel out of the state for whatever reason, while his people faced dangers of death and displacement.'The only trip I am disposed to undertaking for now is answering calls to come for aid of the affected communities or for discussions on how to mitigate their suffering,' the governor said.In Bayelsa, Mr. Diri said that the state government has already set up a committee to tackle flood and other natural disasters. He, therefore, called on all affected communities to liaise with the committee to enable government respond appropriately to their plight. At Toru-Orua, the native community of Governor Seriake Dickson, where water from the river has started flowing into the community, having over flown its banks, Diri said he decided to visit the town due to conflicting reports about the flood situation in the community. The Deputy Chief of Staff commended the people for their efforts at combating the menace and called on other communities to take precautionary measures to avoid loss of life and mitigate other effects of flooding. In some of the communities Governor Obi visited, he held meetings with stakeholders on best possible way to render immediate assistance to the people.
