Kwara Assembly passes community health insurance

The Kwara StateHouse of Assemblyhas passed the state Community Health Insurance Scheme Bill into Law.This followed the adoption of the report of the House Committee on Health and Environment.The Speaker of the House of Assembly, Alhaji Rasaq Atunwa, said the bill, having passed through its third reading, had satisfied the constitutional requirement of the 1999 Constitution as amended as well as the House Rules.He, therefore, directed the Clerk of the House to prepare a neat copy of the bill for the governor's assent.The bill seeks to establish the State Community Health Insurance Scheme so as to provide affordable healthcare to low income earners.The Chairman of the House Committee on Health and Environment, Malam Mande Aliyu, said the government was subsidising the health needs of the people through the scheme by 90 per cent for the low income earners.He said the pilot scheme had started in some local government areas of the state, adding that the gesture would soon be extended to other local governments that had not benefited.Mande urged the beneficiaries not to misuse the opportunity provided by the government and commended the state government for the programme.
