Manu Ginobili Opts out of Spurs Contract: Latest Details, Comments and Reaction

Published by Bleacher Report on Wed, 22 Jun 2016

San Antonio Spurs guard Manu Ginobili isn't quite ready to call it a career yet and will at least test the free-agent market as he reportedly has opted out of the last year of his contract.ESPN.com's Marc Stein first reported Ginobili was expected to opt out of his deal before The Vertical's Shams Charania, citing sources, reported that Ginobiliexercised his player option to get out of a deal that would've paid him approximately $2.94 million this coming year, perSpotrac.Ginobili logged a career-low 19.6 minutes per game this past season in 58 contests, but he was rather proficient with his limited time. The 38-year-oldposted averages of 9.6 points, 2.5 rebounds, 3.1 assists and 1.1 steals while shooting 45.3 percent from the floor and 39.1 percent from three point range.Although this move may come as somewhat of a surprise, it's possible Ginobili will indeed return for a 15th and perhaps final season with the Spurs. The rise in the NBA salary cap gives Ginobili room to demand more money in what should be his swan song in 2016-17.The solid play from Ginobili this past season suggests he still has something in the tank to offer San Antonio or another contender who'd like a marquee role player with four NBA titles on his resume.Considering the Spurs don't have many viable 2-guards outside of Jonathan Simmons and Danny Green, who's coming off the worst shooting full season of his career, they'd be wise to bring Ginobili back aboard even if it costs a little extra. Not only would Ginobili deserve the opportunity, but San Antonio would likely welcome the reunion. General manager R.C. Buford was named Executive of the Year in 2015-16 and could find a clever way to add other pieces while still accommodating Ginobili for one season. In the unlikely event Ginobili does indeed leave the Spurs for good, any of their rivals ought to try to scoop him up and gain insight into what's allowed San Antonio to be a paragon of NBA success.
