GMMC coach counts gains for winning Milo Basketball Championship

WHEN Coach Tinism Dickson joined Adamawa's General Murtala Mohammed College , Yola in 2006, he wanted to impart the knowledge he acquired at Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) as well as National Institute for Sports (NIS) on the students especially the rudiment of basketball.From then, he ensured that the students kept to training as he began working hard to bring glory to the school. Despite taking part in series of competitions including the annual Milo Secondary School Basketball Championship, they could not make any headway. But in 2011, they emerged champions from the zonal qualifiers to make it to the Lagos grand finale.To crown their efforts of five years, they proved bookmakers wrong by lifting the trophy on October 2011 and from this feat, many parents in Adamawa have continued to enrol their wards in the school.'I want to say winning the Milo tournament has brought lots of pride to our school that parents now prefer to enrol their wards in our school in Yola. I want to say categorically that the feat has brought lots of good tidings to the school that even the state government has now shown lot of interest there. For me, it is a dream come true having joined the school in 2006 after my first degree in Physical and Health Education (PHE) from ABU. Aside this, I did my coaching course at NIS in Lagos . We have been taking part in various competitions and I want to say that since 2011 that we won Milo, it has been from one good thing to another,' Dickson said.He added: 'I want to attribute the success of the school to the enormous support I got from the school management especially the principal, who was my former lecturer. He never gave up on the team and he was always there for us and he never withdrew his support at any point in time. I want to say he was behind the success of the team. I also want to thank Nestle Nigeria Plc for keeping faith with the competition for years and for creating the platform for students to showcase their talents in basketball.'Dickson, who coached the team at the maiden Youthfit Under-17 tournament in Johannesburg , South Africa , described the trip as memorable for the students.
