Chevron Junior Masters Tennis tourney begins

THE 13th annual Chevron Junior Masters Tennis tournament served off yesterday at the tennis courts of the Lagos Lawn Tennis Club, Onikan, with over 250 children vying for honours in the competition.It will end on October 7.According to the organisers of the competition which started in 1999 with technical support from the Nigerian Tennis Federation (NTF), participants were drawn from the NNPC/Chevron Junior Tennis Programme and young players selected through competitions organised across the country.In addition to the tournament, the organisers also revealed that NNPC/Chevron also organizes an annual Junior Tennis Summer Coaching Clinic, which benefits more than 60 boys and girls, all residents of Lagos State, who are between the ages of eight and 14.The youngsters who qualify at the end of the Clinic are selected to represent Lagos State in the NNPC/Chevron Junior Tennis Masters Tournament.A release by the organisers indicated that the objective of the tournament is to enhance the development of both mental and physical capabilities in the young participants; and to revive tennis in Nigeria, thereby granting support to the Federal Governments efforts at sports development in the country.'Skills learnt during this programme provide youth with an opportunity to participate in Lawn tennis events at both national and international levels. The tournament targets mostly the less privileged, but still welcomes all interested youths. In addition, beyond a competitive stand point, this Junior Masters Tournament enables the formation of bonds, friendships, and most importantly, improves communication skills amongst youths,' the statement said.
