94 Eagles not good enough -Oliseh

Published by Tribune on Tue, 02 Oct 2012

FORMER Super Eagles captain Sunday Oliseh has faulted the wishes of some Nigerians who believed that the country should build a team compared only with the 1994 squad. The argument of most Nigerians is that the 1994 set of the Eagles who won that year's Africa Cup of Nations In Tunisia and also took the country to her first World Cup appearance in USA remains Nigeria's best, but the ex Ajax Armsterdam midfielder has a different opinion. From his own perspective, the squad of which he was a member could be the best at that period, but can never be good for this present day. That team was made up of players with fearsome reputations including Stephen Keshi, late Rashidi Yekini, Sunday Oliseh, Emmanuel Amuneke, Finidi George, Peter Rufai, Austin Okocha, Daniel Amokachie, Ben Iroha, Augustine Eguavoen and others.Speaking at the just concluded Soccerex Lagos Seminar, Oliseh said. "I hear people talk about wanting to return Nigeria to the days of the Olisehs, the Kanus, the Finidi's and so on."But the problem is that if we get Nigeria back to where we were in '94 and '96 when we won the Nations Cup and Olympics gold, it's not good enough to be in the second division of world football."We have to think higher, set our standards much higher because football has evolved."The former Juventus midfielder advocated a return to organised, structured development as the key. "The difference between Europe and Africa is that football development in Africa is based on individual talent."We must find a way to plan structured programmes to develop young players from an early age."
