Northern leaders sabotage North's unity 'Kaze

Published by Tribune on Tue, 02 Oct 2012

A member of theHouse ofRepresentatives, representing Jos South/Jos East federal constituency of Plateau State, Honourable Bitrus Kaze, has stated that those in leadership position in the northern part of the country have sabotaged its unity.Speaking with the Nigerian Tribune in Jos, the lawmaker said the prevailing ethnic and religious strife in the North had watered down its unity as the people no longer see themselves as one unlike in the past, adding that the development called for reflection.'We cannot be fighting ourselves and expect unity, it is not possible. Some of the elders are using the strife to champion their personal interest at the detriment of collective interest. The house that is divided against itself will collapse. These people have sabotaged the economy and politics and destroyed the unity that would have been our strength,' he said.According to him, traditional rulers are also guilty, adding that many of them are playing the dual functions of politician and traditional ruler.Kaze called for a change of heart among the leaders, urging them to desist from exploiting religion to cause divide and rule .On Nigeria's 52nd independence, he said the country was better than some countries, adding that it would have been a far better place if all Nigerians, especially those in leadership positions had been more patriotic and committed to the cause of the nation. 'It is high time we saw Nigeria as our personal property and be more patriotic on issues relating to its development. Nigeria can become a better country if all of us show commitment to its caus,' he said.
