Oyo commissioner counsels on good sanitation, healthy living

Published by Tribune on Tue, 02 Oct 2012

INDIGENES and residents of Oyo State have been urged to be conscious of the incessant flood ravaging many parts of the country and avoid doing anything that could block waterways and gutters. The Oyo State Commissioner for Environment and Habitat, Honourable Dauda Wasiu, gave this advice during an interview with Community News. He said every resident of Ibadan and Oyo State in general should be aware that there was regular downpour in recent time and many environmental management agencies, including Nigeria Meteorological and Environmental Agencies, had been warning that there would be heavy rainfall which would herald flooding in different parts of the country.'Therefore, there is the need for our people not to throw refuse inside drainage and gutters, as well as avoid anything that could block waterways as well as block free flow of rivers and streams,' he added. The commissioner further called on the people to support the present civilian administration in Oyo State, under the leadership of Governor Abiola Ajimobi to make the state remain one of the neat, decent states in the country, adding that the environmental and sanitation programmes of Governor Ajimobi were not only to beautify Oyo State, but to also promote a good and healthy living among the citizenry.Honourable Wasiu further appealed to those erecting illegal shops and structures in unauthorised places, especially in the city of Ibadan and near the highways to desist from the act, stressing that asking them to leave the main road was for their own good.'The progress and prosperity of Oyo State is a joint effort of the leaders and followers alike,' he added.
