NGO disburses N12bn loan to women

THE Justice, Peace and Development Commission (JDPC), Ijebu-Ode Catholic Diocese, said that it had given more than N12 billionloan to women across the Southwest.Mrs. Florence Ogunupebi, the co-ordinator of organisation's micro-finance institution, Centre For Grassroots Economic Empowerment (CGEE), disclosedthis on Sunday during an award ceremony to honour women who faithfully participated in the scheme.Ogunupebi said that the money was disbursed between 2000 when the commission was established to date.According to her,more than 100,000 women across the Southwest had benefitted from thescheme.The coordinator also saidthat the award ceremony was organised to honour customers whohad remained committed and steadfast to the loan scheme.'Since the inception of this scheme, we realised that we havesome people who remained committed and steadfast to the programme with their performance outstanding.'They have been faithful in repayment and they have not been diverting the money given to them to do another thing, and we see this as an opportunity to honour them.'She said that theinstitution had zero tolerancefor default, noting thatnone of the awardees failed to repay their loan when it was due.She notedthat the loan had impacted positively on the lives of the women, stressing that the schemewas established to uplift the poor women in the society.'The objective of this micro-finance institution is to provide soft loans to the poor, most especially those who have no capacity to access commercial credit.'It is also to provide food on the household table using a woman as an entry point into the family.
