UI plans centre to check sudden deaths among teachers

WORRIED about the spate of deaths among teachers, the University of Ibadan (UI) has concluded plans to establish a centre for the study of Haemoglobinopathy.The institution's Vice Chancellor, Prof. Isaac Adewole who disclosed this at a special congress of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) organised in honour of a deceased lecturer, said the planned re-establishment of the centre was part of efforts to find solutions to diseases that have for many years constitute major threat to humanity.The Dean of Faculty of Arts at the university, Prof. Kolawole Aderemi Olu-Owolabi had a few weeks ago slumped at Mokola market.The VC maintained that the study to be carried out in the centre would include Sickle Cell Anaemia,and other related diseases saying, with the present situation, the time has come for University of Ibadan to rededicate itself for the study of dynamics of diseases.Adewole said the centre was first established at the University in the 60s only for the founder of the centre to leave the institution some years later.He assured that the university authority would provide the necessary infrastructureto facilitate the timely establishment of the centre in honour of the late teacher.ASUU's National President, Dr. Nasri Faggedescribed the deceased 'as an honest man,who deserved to live longer.'Fagge, in a the message read by ASUU's National Treasurer, Dr. Ademola Aremu, said the Late Professor Olu-Owolab's 'resolute and courageouswillpower to live despite obvious health challenges is a proof that after all, death can be conquered.'Chairman's ASUU (UI) chapter, Dr. Segun Ajiboye said the late Olu-Owolabi wasan original thinker, a philosopher of note, adding thathe was also a development activist who contributed immensely to the general discourse of the future of education in Africa and the possibility of salvaging the Nigerian situation.
