Foreigner with explosives, 2 others nabbed

Published by Tribune on Wed, 03 Oct 2012

A Burkinabe and twoNigerians (nameswithheld) were on Saturday arrested by policemen at a border town linking Oyo State with a North Central state for being in possession of explosives. This was disclosed to the Nigerian Tribune on Sunday at the police command headquarters in Eleyele, Ibadan, by the Commissioner of Police in Oyo State, Mr Mbu Joseph Mbu, who was represented by the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of operations, Mr Musa Kimo. The police commissioner said that the Burkinabe was in possession of items suspected to be explosives by policemen, who were on patrol at the border area, when they searched the vehicle conveying the foreigner. The other two were reportedly arrested when they tried to bribe the policemen with N20,000 in order to get the arrested foreigner released.According to Mr Mbu, the suspect could not give a convincing explanation of how he came about the dangerous items. The Commissioner of Police said: 'the police anti-bomb experts were contacted and on inspection, they confirmed that the items were explosives and could destroy a whole community.''When interviewed, the Burkinabe claimed that the explosives were given to him by the director of a mining company he was working for, for onward transportation to his mining company in a North Central state. However, when asked to produce his staff identification card and the covering letter issued to him to move the explosives from the purported company, he could not tender any of the two.
