Senate: Lack of political will halting Nigeria's progress

The Senate has declared that progress will continue to elude Nigeria so long the leadership lacks the political will to transform the nation.The declaration was made yesterday during the adoption of a motion sponsored by the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Rules and Business, Senator Ita Enang (PDP, Akwa Ibom North-East) and 107 other senators, on the nation's 52nd independence anniversary.Echoing the views of the senators, Senate President David Mark said the nation's progress would be stagnated for the next 20 years unless the leadership is determined to take decisions that will benefit the country.Mark said: 'If there is nothing else, we should be able to congratulate ourselves for still being one united nation. That on its own is an achievement. There is no gain-saying that we are not where we'd have loved to be. Certainly we are not there, but that is not to say we have not made progress. We've made some considerable achievements. For that alone, we've to show gratitude to God. We need to pray and work hard.{loadposition user30}Prayers alone will not solve the problem. More than anything else, we just need political will to take our policies to a logical conclusion, whether at the executive, legislative, state or federal level.'Senator Uche Chukwumerije (PDP, Abia North) said Nigeria had almost become a failed nation at 52 as she was still importing some of the products it used to export.
