Expert tasks Plateau voters, security agencies on polls

Published by Guardian on Thu, 04 Oct 2012

THE Director, Centre for the Advocacy of Justice and Rights, Gad Peter, has advised the electorate who are going to vote on Saturday, October 6 Plateau North Senatorial District election not to sell their consciences for a pittance, a practice which he said had characterised elections in Nigeria.Peter equally called on security agencies to be impartial and professional in the discharge of their duties for a peaceful election. He also appealed to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to prove its worth as an impartial election umpire by ensuring that all sensitive materials arrive in good time and that the right person who is elected by the electorate is declared the winner.Plateau North Senatorial seat became vacant on July 8 following the sudden death of Senator Gyang Dantong as a result of a stampede in Maselwhere he had gone for the mass burial of those who were massacred the previous day.Peter urged political parties to use tribunals that will be set up after the elections to address their grievances instead of taking the law into their hands.'Moreover, there can never be politics and development without peace; there can never be elections without a peaceful atmosphere. Therefore, this election is an opportunity for the good people of Plateau State and (Plateau North) Senatorial zone in particular, to prove to the whole world that they have the capacity to have a peaceful, free, fair and credible election in Plateau State. Let us do it for the sake of the unborn Plateau child, let's prove to the world that citizens of Plateau State are a people of peace, order and a people that have value for humanity,' he said.
