Published by Tribune on Fri, 05 Oct 2012

PRESIDENTGoodluckJonathan has set up a committee to examine possibility of lodging an appeal on the International Court of Justice's (ICJ) judgment on Bakassi Peninsula delivered on October 10, 2002.The court judgment led the Federal Government to cede Bakassi and some other communities to Cameroon amid protests from Nigerian inhabitants.Senate had, last week, unanimously passed a resolution, which gave a mandate to the president to appeal ruling in view of the emergence of new facts on the matter. The decision to set up the committee was reached at a meeting of President Jonathan, the leadership of the National Assembly and other stakeholders at the State House on Wednesday.Governor of Cross Rivers State, Liyel Imoke, who addressed State House correspondents after a closed-door meeting, said the committee was also asked to fashion out ways to care for displaced Bakassi people. The governor, who did not disclose the composition of the committee, said that it would work and submit its report as quickly as possible. He observed that Jonathan had demonstrated great leadership quality in convening the meeting and taking a firm stance on some of the decisions taken. Also speaking, the Senate President, David Mark, said that the executive and the legislature were now working together on the issue and hoped to achieve good result.Former Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF) Prince Bola Ajibola, who played a key role during the litigation 10 years ago, attended the meeting. He told reporters that the Federal Government had shown concern for the Bakassi issue.
