Designers, Models For UNILAG Fashion Week

Published by Guardian on Sat, 06 Oct 2012

FINAL screening for catwalk designers and catwalk models for the upcoming UNILAG Fashion Week (UFW) took place recently at the TAI Suites in the Park View Estate in Ikoyi. The Reality TV auditioning, which was a whole day affair, witnessed many young, aspiring models and designers both within and from outside the university community undergo serious screening to pick the best among them to grace the catwalk at UFW 2012.Two prominent judges at the screening included Naomi Keshinro, the brain behind the fashion week and renowned designer Larry Ojomo of the Mon Ami label. In the rigorous screening exercise Naomi, a designer herself, who runs the Kona Signature label, explained that, 'the judges were looking out for creativity, finishing and originality. In short, we were looking out for those who know what it takes to be a designer.'At the end of the auditioning, 10 designers and 14 models were selected for the competition. They would be preparing for the two-week boot camp which begins from October 13, where they would be mentored by a panel of judges comprising established designer brands, magazine editors and company CEOs, who would pass on a wealth of knowledge to the designers/models, ensuring that they produce a world- class collection/portfolio that would gain international approval. The finalists would showcase their collection/model during the fashion week on November 22 to 23 and the emerging winner of the process would go ahead to win the star prize and title of UFW Catwalk Top Designer /Top Model 2012.Naomi, however, pointed out that not all designers willing to showcase must go through the competition. She said designers who are confident of their works could showcase their designs at the exhibition that will also take place during the fashion week. Such established brands can download forms from the website unilagfashionweek.com/designers/showcase/ to register for the exhibition. The UNILAG Fashion Week (UFW), organized, as part of activities to mark the university's 50th anniversary, is a platform to showcase the very best in the African fashion industry, providing an opportunity for the very creative minds and models to show their talents to the world.
