Methodist Church Restates Commitment To Nation's Development

Published by Guardian on Sun, 07 Oct 2012

THE Methodist Church Nigeria will not rest on its oars in assisting the country to achieve its goals and aspirations, says Prelate of the Church, His Eminence Dr. Sunday Ola Makinde. At a media briefing on 170 years of Methodism in Nigeria and 50 years of the Church's autonomy, held at the Cathedral of Unity, Wuse Zone 3, Abuja, recently, Makinde said: 'As a Church, we are not prepared to close our eyes to the nation's ills. We are not prepared to keep quiet and watch the ship of State sink. Rather, we are committed, more than ever, to join forces with progressive elements in the land at ensuring that we have a safe landing.'The Prelate noted: 'One of the clear evidence of this commitment is found in our foray into the area of science and technology with the setting up of the Wesley University of Science and Technology, in Ondo town, where we are partnering with government to build capacity in many young minds. We believe that technological advancement is the future and that Nigeria cannot afford to be left behind.'A dinner, organised, last Thursday, by the Church to celebrate the anniversary, had featured attendance by eminent Nigerians. Among these was the Special Guest of Honour, President Jonathan (represented by the Minister for Niger Delta, Mr. Godsday Orubebe). Also in attendance were Generals Yakubu Gowon and Theophilus Danjuma; Governor Peter Obi; his Akwa Ibom State counterpart, Godswill Akpabio (represented by his deputy), and the Minister for Science and Technology, Prof. Ita Okon Bassey Ewa.
