Ondo Group Seeks Credible Elections Ahead Guber Polls

Published by Guardian on Mon, 08 Oct 2012

AS the October 20 date for gubernatorial elections in Ondo State draws near, a socio-political group, the Ondo State Progressives has called on stakeholders to ensure the elections are free, fair and credible. The group, made up of professionals of different leanings, urged government officials, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and security operatives to put viable structures in place and use their offices to make the people's votes count.Speaking with newsmen in Lagos, yesterday, in a bid to debunk allegations of division within the rank of the association, the chairman, Ondo State Progressives (Lagos chapter), Mr. Dele Oduwale, said the group remains united and committed to development and uplift of the state. He said that though the group is no longer endorsing any aspirant for the governorship office, it remains unwavering in its resolve to see to the enthronement of good leadership.Earlier in the race, the group had thrown its weight behind Dr. Olu Agunloye, who failed to secure a ticket to contest on the platform of Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN).In the aftermath, Agunloye defected to the Labour Party. Some members of the group followed him, while some, with firm belief in ACN ideals, remained in the party. The development fueled division within the group.Oduwale dismissed the news of rift as figment of imaginations, saying, 'this group remains one, and after the elections, we would come back to evaluate our efforts at good governance in our state.'Our intentions are not just political, but we realise that to develop the state, you must belong to a political party through which we could then launch our development agenda.'In the run up to the elections, Oduwale disclosed that the group has stepped up its enlightenment campaign, aimed at letting people know the power of their votes in turning around the fortunes of the state.'We implore the electorate to vote wisely by selecting the party with the right programmes and right leader that would deliver good governance,' he said.
