There is hope for better leaders in Nigeria

Published by Tribune on Tue, 09 Oct 2012

Their names continue to echo over the years, even to the unborn generation at the time of their existence. The legacies of Obafemi Awolowo, Nnamdi Azikiwe, Ahmadu Bello, Tafawa Balewa and others who fought selflessly for Nigeria's glory and independence still remain a monumental inspiration to many Nigerians. In the light of this, one cannot but wonder if wishing for leaders with the same aspirations in this present time is just an illusion. To get the perspectives of Nigerians on the issue, the Nigerian Tribune conducted an opinion poll on our website, www.tribune.com.ng and of the 1054 people who participated in the poll, 662 people representing 62.8 per cent opined that this will soon become a reality in the country, while 356 people representing 33.8 per cent seem to have lost faith in the affairs of the Nigerian politics. Thirty six people, representing 3.4 per cent, were, however, indifferent to the issue. People also had the chance to express their views, as the question was also posted on our facebook page. Doyin Adeoye brings the report.ACESKAY Loremikan Oluwatobi: Yes, Nigeria can produce such people. We just have to sit back and hope for better days.Edward Koye-Ladele: Far from it, because the visions the leaders had back in those days were selfless service, good governance, the betterment of the people and patriotism. But today this has changed to selfishness, greed and carelessness for the people.Bayo Sunday: In this generation' I doubt it.Sola Oseni: Never, Nigeria has a lot of challenges that cannot make that dream a reality and moreover, even if there is, they will kill such a person.Sola Dudubo: Nigeria is a blessed country and the only challenge we seem to be facing at the moment is bad leadership. But I'm sure with the spirit of patriotism possessed by many Nigerians, Nigeria will soon be a better country.Chief Oluwatosin Akinbiodun: It is still possible, even more than their performances, because there is someone like man but no one like God.Akinrogunde Omolere Moses: Until God wipes away all the Lucifers out of our government, it cannot happen.Adeaga Adeyemi: I think the likes of them will soon come.Gabriel Oluwafemi: Yes, but the corrupt leaders of our days will never allow their voices to be heard.Adewumi Olumide: Yes.Witty MC: Very possible, we can even have better people than those people, just that influential networking is having the widest coverage of corruption in the country.Adesokan Adebowale Opeyemi: I don't think so.Sodeeque Opeyemi Isiaq: No, not in this generation.Ademola Segun Adesoji: Of course yes, when one goes, another one comes. You and I could be that person. They have made history for themselves, we also can make ours.Tegbe Joshua: Yes, we can. But it calls for commitment, faithfulness, self-control, feelings for others, pure heart and the like.Ajayi Fhemmy: There are still so many people who can actually do better than our past heroes, but what about the cabals who will not give such people a chance, due to their own selfish interest.Stephen Ogbu: Producing the likes of Obafemi Awolowo is what Nigeria has been doing.Abimbola Olagunju: Yes, it is very much possible, it is only God that has no equal. Even people that will be better off than them can still emerge.Olatunbosun Olaniran: With prayers, I think we can produce them.James Adeleke: Yes, we can.Perterside Ajakaiye: With time we shall get there.Shuaib Abba: Of course, we can achieve that with time and prayers.Omotola Olawale: Yes, there are still good people like those of the past.Ahmed Ogundare: There are lots of them but they have to tread the part of corruption before they get to the top. They are already corrupted.Abefe Ayodeji Ismail: With God all things are possible.Olanrewaju Moses Imolore: With God, they can do it, but the bad ones are more than the good ones.Olukemi Mary: Yes, by the grace of God.Soneye Olufunso: Yes, the hereditary trait of those ones still exist, meaning that Nigeria can still produce such , but I bet it, they will not survive because they will be terminated at a tender age. Unless God intervenes.Oladeji Love Ayokunnu: Sure, even sooner than we thought, there will be people like them in this country!Folarin Temitope: Yes, there are still good people, but I think to locate them will be a little bit difficult.
