Arepo killings: Police recover bodies of NNPC officials

Published by Tribune on Tue, 09 Oct 2012

DECOMPOSED andbullet-riddled bodies of the slain officials of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), who were killed by pipeline vandals in Arepo area of Ogun State, have been recovered by the police.Six suspected members of the gang responsible for the death of the officials had also been arrested by the police. The bodies were, at the weekend, recovered by men of the Special Task Force on Anti-Pipeline Vandalism, led by Friday Ibadin, an Assistant Commissioner of Police. The recovery came after four week of searching on the waterways and creek around the scene of vandalism in ArepoThe bodies had since been identified as those of the deputy manager in charge of Pipelines Right of Way (PROW) and two other engineers deployed to effect repairs on a vandalised pipeline in Arepo on September 5.According to Ibadin, officers using speedboats and helicopters to comb the creeks near Arepo dug up the bodies in two shallow graves across a river.'We found, in a decomposing state, bullet-riddles bodies of the three victims. We learnt that the body of the local security guard employed by NNPC, Taye a.k.a Dead Man, was cut into pieces and disposed off,' he said.Nigerian Tribune gathered that the recovery was as a result of the confessional statement from one of the arrested suspectsIbadin, who spoke in Lagos on Sunday, added that 'shortly after the incident, the Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Abubakar, reconstituted the dissolved anti-vandal team. It became important to get to the root of the incident that led to the death of these NNPC officials.'Speaking on how they recovered the bodies, Ibadin said 'it took six hours of sailing to get to the spot. We had 40 heavily armed men and we took along a pathologist, a coroner and the medical team from NNPC that eventually identified the bodies.
