Kogi: Foundation donates relief material, cash to flood victims

Laughter Source Foundation, founded by Chief Gowon Haruna, the Ogohi-Attah Igala of Iyale, has donated relief worth millions of naira to flood victims in Bassa and Ibaji Local Government areas of Kogi State.Chief Haruna, a member of Kogi State House of Assembly, representing Dekina/Biraidu Constituency, presented the materials to the Liaision Officer I of Bassa Local Government Area of the state, Maigida Umar.He said his foundation was deeply touched by the havoc meted out to the people and therefore, had to reach out to them, to cushion the effects on the victims.Haruna said he would pass the message to members of the board of governors of the foundation, which include the incumbent governor and the immediate past governor, their wives and other close members of his family.He further stressed the need for a permanent solution to the experience, adding that he would take pro-active measures at talking to people of like minds to come to their assistance immediately.The lawmaker said although he was not from the area, he would ensure a quick response to the plight of the people in his capacity as chairman, House Committee on Special Duties.Fifty bags of rice, drugs worth over N250,000 and cash were donated, apart from the N100,000 given to the youth of the area.Receiving the items, the Liasion Officer I of Bassa Local Government, Maigida Umar, said the people of the local government would never forget the philanthropic gestures of Haruna, adding that he was the first, through a non governmental organisation, to reach out to the victims.Also responding, the Ohiegba of Mozun, Alhaji Bukar Khalid, said the leadership and compassion of the donor was un-equalled and promised to pay back the gesture in the future.At Ibaji Local Government Liasion Office at Idah, the Foundation also donated 40 bags of rice, drugs worth over N250,000, a lorry load of firewood, a cash donation of 300,000 as well as bales of clothes.Responding on behalf of Ibaji people, the Onu Ujeh and Chairman of Ibaji Traditional Council, John Egwemi, said he was short of words of appreciation for the donor and prayed that God to continue to bless him.The Ogohi Attah Iyale, who visited some of the camps hosting the victims and also at river side, where more of the victims were being brought to shore by officials of the National Emergency Relief Agency (NEMA), commended the state governor, Captain Idris Wada, for his efforts since the begining of the flood.He said that the governor had shown that he was a true leader who was ready to work for the development of the state.
