BPP saves N350 billion from inflated contracts

Published by Guardian on Tue, 09 Oct 2012

THE Bureau for Public Procurement (BPP) said it has saved N350 billion for the country since its inception. The money was saved through proper evaluation of projects and contract. The Director-General of the agency, Emeka Muoma Ezeh, disclosed this yesterday in his speech during the commissioning of N32 million Public Procurement Research Centre (PPRC) at the Federal University of Technology Owerri (FUTO).He also noted that since its inception, over 350 complaints had been received.'Over 350 complaints have been received since 2007. While some are still being analyzed, about ten are at various stages, at various levels of litigation.'The BPP has since 2007 also prevented about N350 billion from being spent as contract sums. It means that government debt profile has been reduced by this amount. It also implies that more monies have been provided for infrastructure like schools, health centres, roads and other utilities,' he said.Ezeh said the Act signed into law in 2007 by the late President Umaru Yar A'dua, made the job of due process easier. He commended the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the World Bank and the Executive Director of the International Law Institute (ILI), U S, Ms. Kim Phan, among other supporting agencies in the country for their support.By the time the furnishing of the centre is completed, it would have gulped about N50 million, he disclosed.Commissioning the building, the UNDP's Resident Representative in the country, Mrs. Ade Mamoete, said the bureau under the Director-General has promoted transparency in governance.
