Arsenal Transfer News: Latest on Robin van Persie and Wojciech Szczesny Rumours

Published by Bleacher Report on Mon, 04 Jul 2016

Robin van Persie could reportedly be set to make a shock return to Arsenal this summer amid speculation over his future at Fenerbahce.According to the Sun's Daniel Cutts, the Dutchman is hoping to come back to the Premier League and is specifically targeting a return to London, and could cost just 4 million.Per Cutts,Azil Yildirim, the president of the Turkish club, said: "Van Persie' Were waiting for buyers, if he wants to be sold."The Independent's Samuel Lovett further reports that "many" Gunners supporters "have taken to Twitter to urge the club to re-sign the 32-year-old," while the Mirror's Aaron Flanagan adds he "could return to Arsenal."Van Persie scored 153 goals for Arsenal in 332 appearances, before moving to Manchester United in 2012.Last season, he netted 22 times for Fenerbahce in all competitions. Here's a look at each strike:However, even for a fee as low as the one reported, a return to the Emirates Stadium seems highly unlikely. His move to the Red Devils was not taken well by a great many Arsenal fans after he'd spent eight years at the club, and his goal return declined with each season at Old Trafford, so there are valid concerns as to whether he could even be effective in the Premier League once more.Further, Arsenal announced the signing of Japanese forward Takuma Asano, per their official website.Though the 21-year-old is untested in European football, Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger rarely strengthens a position with more than one signing in a single transfer window. If he does sign another striker this summer, it's more likely to be a marquee captureat the very least, it's unlikely to be a divisive former player who will turn 33 before the new season begins.Meanwhile, according to Marco Garghentino of Italian outlet GazzaMercato (h/t James Benson of the DailyExpress), the Gunners will reportedly hold talks with AS Roma on Monday regardingWojciech Szczesny, as the Giallorossi are eager for him to stay at the Stadio Olimpico.Further, Sky Italia (h/t Football Italia) report he could return to Roma on another season-long loan with an18 million (15.1 million) option to make the deal permanent next summer. Here is how his stats compared with Arsenal stopper Petr Cech's last season, perSquawka:DespiteSzczesnyenjoying a fairly productive loan spell in the Italian capital last year, unseating Cech at the Emirates isn't likely to happen barring a long-term injury, and David Ospina is also in the mix.The 26-year-old is a fairly strong goalkeeper, but he is not at the world-class level Cech has operated at for the majority of his career.Expect the deal to go through in a move that will benefit all parties.
