Liberia's silence worries NFF, as Eagles' camp bubbles

Published by Guardian on Wed, 10 Oct 2012

THE Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) yesterday expressed dissatisfaction with the attitude of the Liberia Football Association, which has not communicated its delegation's travel plans and other relevant information to enable the federation prepare for the Lone Stars' arrival in Nigeria.Nigeria hosts Liberia in a 2013 Nations Cup qualifier in Calabar this weekend. The first leg of the tie in Monrovia ended in a 2-2 draw. However, exasperated by the Liberian FA's attitude, NFF General Secretary, Musa Amadu, said yesterday: 'I really don't know what they (Liberia) are up to. They have not communicated their arrival date to us.'However, we are not bothered about that. Rather, we're concerned with preparing our team optimally to achieve victory. Whenever the Liberia delegation arrives, we will be ready for them.'Already, the Super Eagles are in Calabar putting finishing touches to preparations for the cracker, which is delicately poised after both teams ended the first leg 2-2 in Monrovia on September 8.Last month's game at the Samuel Kanyon Doe Stadium was the first time Nigeria and Liberia would square up in a Cup of Nations qualifier. Both countries had only previously been involved in FIFA World Cup and Olympic Games qualifiers, as well as friendly games. They met once in the Africa Cup of Nations finals, in 2002, when Julius Aghahowa's goal separated both teams in a group phase match in Mali.Liberia needs a high-score draw or a win (neither of which it had ever recorded in Nigeria) in Calabar to turn the table and bar the Super Eagles from next year's African football house party in South Africa.Meanwhile, about 19 members of the Super Eagles, including some foreign-based stars, trained at the U.J Esuene Stadium yesterday, while a full house is expected today after the remaining players would have arrived in Calabar last night.
