Here's why one Mexican man's photo keeps spreading on the internet after deadly terror attacks

Published by Business Insider on Tue, 05 Jul 2016

One mans photo keeps mysteriously popping up after deadly terrorist attacks, appearing on lists of victims and alongside pleas from alleged family members on social media. The Mexican mans photo showed up in relation to the recent attack on Atatrk in Turkey, as well as after the EgyptAir crash, the Pulse nightclub shooting in Orlando, and many others. He even appeared in a video The New York Times put together of Orlando victims. But its all fake and likely motivated by a dispute over money in Mexico, according to a France 24 investigation surfaced by Gizmodo. France 24 contacted social media users who were sharing the mans picture, and they all told the same story: they claimed they knew him personally and he cheated them out of sums of money up to $1,000. This man used to be my friend but hes cheated money out of at least four people who I know, one person said. I lodged both civil and criminal complaints against him, but because the legal proceedings are dragging on and he still hasnt given us back our money, we decided to punish him by posting his photo online. Our goal is to ruin his reputation.France 24 contacted the man, who acknowledged the prank was related to a money dispute. He said he had asked the sites with his photo to take it down, but hadnt heard a response. Once the internet has gotten ahold of your likeness, it can be hard to claw it back.Read the whole story at France 24.SEE ALSO:Apple Music has one big weakness in its fight against SpotifyJoin the conversation about this storyNOW WATCH: The most annoying thing about the iPhone isn't changing any time soon
