Now that the initial frenzy of free agency has subsided in the NHL, teams around the league have been given an opportunity to take a step back and take inventory of their rosters to reassess what they need ahead of the 2016-17 season. As the summer progresses, there are still a number of names that could be landing in new places. So let's take a look at the latest rumors around the NHL.Red Wings Looking for BluelinersThe Detroit Red Wings might have missed out on Steven Stamkos after he re-signed with the Tampa Bay Lightning, but they still have been active in July.First, they inked former New York Islanders forward Frans Nielsen and followed it by nabbing Thomas Vanek. Both of those players are capable of scoring over 20 goals per season despite being over 30 years old.But questions surround the Red Wings defense, as the team has been looking for a top-two, two-way defenseman on the trade market since before the NHL draft in late June, perAnsar Khan of MLive.com.Per Khan, the "three prime candidates" Detroit is looking at are Cam Fowler of the Anaheim Ducks, Kevin Shattenkirk of the St. Louis Blues and Jacob Trouba of the Winnipeg Jets. While Shattenkirk is signed through next season and Fowler has a deal through 2017-18, Trouba is a restricted free agent after receiving a qualifying offer from the Jets, allowing the team to match any offer sheet that is submitted to the 22-year-old.For Fowler, he looks to be expendable thanks to the Ducks' depth at defense. Even without a player who has represented the United States at the Olympic Games, the Ducks have the likes of Hampus Lindholm, Simon Despres and Sami Vatanen to bolster down the blue line.Their biggest need is forwards, as Anaheim's offense was ranked 19th in the league. The Red Wings are a team that could sync up well with them for a trade that included Fowler, per Khan."Now, if a deal is to be made for Fowler, it likely would include either Gustav Nyquist or Tomas Tatar as the centerpiece," Khan wrote. "The Red Wings aren't liable to risk trading their 2017 first-round pick, a lottery selection if they miss the playoffs."Like Fowler, Shattenkirk could bring in a top forward for the Blues, as it was made apparent back in December 2015, perBruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun,that the 27-year-old was "looking for a huge deal," which would be too much for St. Louis to handle.Shattenkirk has been the best puck-moving defenseman of the three, recording 14 goals and 30 assists last season. However, he is the oldest, as Fowler is just 24.But with his current contract expiring at the end of the 2016-17 season, dealing a big piece for Shattenkirk is a risky one if he isn't committed to signing an extension.Vadim ShipachyovRussian unrestricted free-agent forward Vadim Shipachyov is a 29-year-old who has spent the past eight seasons playing in the KHL withCherepovets Severstal and St. Petersburg SKA.After scoring 111 goals over those eight years in Russia, he could be looking for a new challenge, per KHL Insider Aivis Kalnins:On Tuesday, sources told Harvey Fialkov of theSun Sentinelthat Shipachyov and the Florida Panthers have been in talks.Per Fialkov, the Panthers have already spent $200 million this offseason and could be spending a bit more for a player Shipachyov's SKA teammates compared to last season's Calder Trophy winner, Artemi Panarin of the Chicago Blackhawks. The Panthers already had the league's sixth-best offense last season by scoring 239 goals, which would make the pursuit of Shipachyov a somewhat confusing choice. But the possibility of having a player put up close to 30 goals on a team that already features scorers like Aleksander Barkov, Jaromir Jagr and Vincent Trocheck could make the Panthers offense an unstoppable one.Stats courtesy of Hockey-Reference.com.
