US Women's Gymnastics Olympic Trials 2016: Sunday Results and Qualifying Scores

Published by Bleacher Report on Mon, 11 Jul 2016

After two nights of all-around competition from the SAP Center in San Jose, California, the United States women's gymnastics team, comprised of five gymnasts, was officially set for the 2016 Summer Games in Rio de Janeiro on Sunday night.United States Women's Gymnastics TeamSimone BilesGabby DouglasLauren HernandezMadison KocianAlexandra RaismanWith five spots on the line, the gymnast with the best all-around score over the two days of competition automatically qualified. A committee led by gymnastics coach Marta Karolyi decided the other four spots. Here are the full two-day results from the all-around competition:USA Gymnastics helped welcome the team:Biles received the automatic bid after another dominant performance highlighted by a brilliant vault that earned a score of 16.200Her floor and her uneven bars were solid. Those all but clinched her the top spot, which she did even after she fell off of the balance beam. The 16-year-old Hernandez and the veteran Raisman also put in admirable performances, finishing second and third, respectively, as they punched their tickets to Rio like everyone expected.Hernandez's balance beam routine was the final activity of the night, and she cemented her place on the team with a brilliant score of 15.700. Both of her balance beam scores over the two days at the trials were the best of all 14 competing gymnasts. However, the same couldn't be said of 2012 two-time gold medalist Douglas. She entered Sunday night in seventh in the standings and had some work to do in order to prove to Karolyi that she deserved to reclaim her spot on the team. She started off on the right foot on the vault when she stucka double layout Yurchenko, earning a score of 15.000.The uneven bars went even better when she posted a 15.250.But for the second straight time, she fell off of the balance beam, dropping her score to 14.100 after the 2.200 deduction.Despite the fall, her display on the uneven bars did her a ton of good, as it is Team USA's most glaring need in the all-around competition. The last spot went to Kocian, whose mastery of the uneven bars clinched her berth onto the team as well. Her overall score of 31.650 on the event was the best over the two days, and her 15.900 on Sunday night was the best single run of the trials. Now it's up to Biles, Hernandez, Raisman, Douglas and Kocian to add to the Americans' medal collection and keepthe tradition of United States excellence at the Olympics alive. The U.S. has won eight medals in the all-around competition at the Olympics, including two gold medals in 1996 at Atlanta and in 2012 at London.Stats courtesy of MyUSAGym.com.
