NLC Suspends 6 Week Strike In Kogi

The organised labour in Kogi, yesterday, suspended the 6-week-old industrial action, following an agreement reached with government to meet most of their demands.The 14-point agreement was reached at a meeting of representatives of government and labour in Lokoja, seat of power.The document was signed by the state deputy governor, Elder Simon Achuba and three others on government side and Com. Onu Edoka, chairman, Nigeria Labour Congress, (NLC) and eight others on behalf of the organised labour.Speaking at the meeting, Edoka said there was general agreement that Dr Jerry Agbajis committee report which captured all MDAs, LGAs, LGEAs, Tertiary Institutions and Pensioners be adopted with continuous filtering.He said that it was also agreed that salaries should be paid into bank accounts of individual workers describing as painful, the decision to use only two banks for the purpose of paying salaries from the bailout fund.It was also agreed that there should be review of recent appointments made in local councils and that Pay As You Earn (PAYE) taxes system be restored.Granting of tax holiday to Kogi State University, Anyigba and the state College of Education, Ankpa as well as release of outstanding promotion letters to deserving workers was also agreed upon.
