I Did My Best To Improve NUCOkojie

The outgoing executive Secretary of National Universities Commission (NUC) Prof. Julius Okojie has said he did his best to improve the commission in the last 10 years.Speaking at the hand-over ceremony in Abuja, , yesterday, Okojie said he, alongside the staff have all worked together over the years to make a success of the system.He said, Im a product of the old school and of various endeavours. Im not a self made man but someone made by so many people. I will not miss my office but I will miss everyone of you.Okojie said NUC has come of age and that they had a long dream of the commission, the law is there at the beginning and we applied the law to achieve the feat in the commission.Okojie who said he would return to the university, noted that two principles of fear of God and the love for neigbour, saw him through in his 10 years as the executive secretary of the commission.He said courageous and strong decisions were taken to improve the system irrespective of the fact that it will not go well with some people.In the commissions quest to achieve quality and access in Nigeria tertiary education system, he said, curriculums were reviewed, postgraduate studies were regulated and numbers of institutions were increased to address the challenges of access and more.Prof Mafiana who is also the most senior director in the commission, extolled his predecessor for the various achievements recorded in office.He said Okojie achievements have gone a long way in improving the quality of the Nigerian University System.We will continue to regulate the university system with courage and I count on the management to give me adequate support as it was given to Prof. Okojie, he said.IMafiana joined the commission as a visiting professor in 2003 to 2005. He returned as a director and was the director of quality assurance before he became the deputy executive secretary.
