Andrew Bogut Comments on Athletes Village at 2016 Olympics

Published by Bleacher Report on Tue, 02 Aug 2016

Dallas Mavericks center Andrew Bogut is set to represent Australia at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, this month, but his first impression of the Olympic Village wasn't exactly glowing.Bogut coined the hashtag "IOC Luxury Lodging" while joking about a range of issues on his official Twitter account. For example, when asked about sleeping on a single bed, the seven-foot Aussie replied: "At #IOCLuxuryLodging we believe a bed is not vital for sleep. Fine tuned athletes can sleep standing up."The 31-year-old veteran also showcased some of the work left to the athletes:The substandard facilities add to Team Australia's misgivings about the Olympic Village, which team officials refused to sleep in last month.Claire Corkery of CNN also reported on Monday that unknown individuals entered their lodging area and allegedly stole a laptop and Zika-protective team shirts after the area had been evacuated for a fire Friday, according to Australian Chef de Mission Kitty Chiller. The delegation also complained about deactivated fire alarms, which caused shooter Warren Potent to sleep through the incident, unaware of the potential danger, per CNN.Last month, the Olympics announced IOC President Thomas Bach would join the athletes by sleeping in the village "as often as possible" during the event. The release also included comments from the 1976 gold medalist in men's fencing."The Olympic Village is the heart of the Olympic Games, and you can really feel the excitement growing as the Games approach," Bach said. "Here in the Village athletes from around the world can come together as competitors and share their experiences."While it's a worthwhile attempt at good faith by the IOC president, Bogut is probably wondering whether Bach had to assemble his own shower curtains, too.
