Olympic Swimming 2016: Live Results and Highlights from Friday's Day 7

The United States was once again strong at the pool during Friday nights swimming events at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio De Janeiro.The American team took gold in three of the four finals and a silver in the fourth.Katie Ledecky entered the womens 800-meter freestyle as a heavy favorite to take home the gold, and the word dominant isnt even strong enough to describe her performance.Ledecky not only won the gold, she finished more than 11 seconds ahead of her nearest competitor and set a world-record time of 8:04.79.Britains Jazmin Carlin captured silver and Hungarys Boglarka Kapas took bronze.Michael Phelps was unsuccessful in his attempt to win a 23rd Olympic gold medal.Singapores Joseph Schooling had to set an Olympic record to hold off Phelps, but he did it to give his country its first gold medal.Phelps finished in a three-way tie with South Africas Chad le Clos and Hungarys Laszlo Cseh for the silver medal.In the upset of the night, the United States Maya DiRado surged past heavy favorite Katinka Hosszu of Hungary to capture her first individual gold medal in the womens 200-meter backstroke.Hosszu, who had captured three previous golds in Rio, was beaten for the first time and took silver.Hilary Caldwell of Canada snagged the bronze.Anthony Ervin, also in a pretty significant upset, took home the gold medal in the mens 50-meter freestyle. He's now the oldest man to capture individual Olympic swimming gold.Ervin, who is 35 years old and also captured gold in this event at the 2000 Sydney Olympics, finished just 0.01-seconds ahead of Frances Florent Manaudou.Nathan Adrian took bronze.
