EPL Results Week 1: Saturday's 2016 Premier League Scores, Top Scorers and Table

Published by Bleacher Report on Sat, 13 Aug 2016

Ronald Koeman earned a 1-1 draw against Tottenham Hotspur in his first Premier League outing as Everton manager on Saturday after Erik Lamela headed in to cancel out Ross Barkley's early free-kick opener. The Toffees were in charge for much of the Goodison Park clash, but Lamela scored against the run of play to snatch Spurs a share of the spoils in their trip to Merseyside. Elsewhere, reigning champions Leicester City got their 2016-17 campaign off to a miserable start after dropping to a 2-1 defeat at Hull City, while Leroy Fer scored to give Swansea City a late 1-0 win at promoted Burnley. There were two other 1-1 results to speak of on the opening day of the season, too, as Southampton drew at home to 10-man Watford, where Ben Watson was sent off,and Stoke City scraped a point at Middlesbrough. Salomon Rondon scored the only goal at Selhurst Park to give West Bromwich manager Tony Pulis a 1-0 win over former club Crystal Palace. No player managed to score more than once in the afternoon kick-offs, but Manchester City will hope to correct that when they host Sunderland in the late fixture.Read on for a roundup of Saturday's results, latest standings and a breakdown of the Premier League top-scorer table as things stand.Harry Kane Muted by Stern Everton DefenceJust as was the case in 2015-16, Tottenham talisman Harry Kane got off to a slow start at Goodison Park, where it was substitute Vincent Janssen who looked like the north Londoners' more promising attacker.A lack of ammunition undoubtedly didn't help the cause, and Kane finished without a shot on goal, per WhoScored.com.YouTuber Andy Castell joked the 23-year-old should have been on set-piece duty:Everton were disappointingly leaky at the back last season, but former Southampton boss Koeman certainly appears to have injected some defensive nous into the side, as Football Espana blogger Yousef Teclab attested:After ending the 2015-16 campaign with 25 goals and collecting the Premier League's Golden Boot, expectations were high for the England frontman, but he fell distinctly flat on this occasion. That being said, it's important to remember Kane didn't score in his first six league games before finding his pace to finish as top scorer last season, meaning Spurs fans may need to show some patience with their star.Jamie Vardy Stumbles in Premier League ReturnLeicester wonder Jamie Vardy grabbed the headlines throughout much of last season, but it was 2015-16 Professional Footballers' Association Player of the Year Riyad Mahrez who grabbed his side's only goal at Hull.Even then, though, Mahrez's goal was from the penalty spot after Demarai Gray was fouled in the box by Tom Huddlestone.Sky Sports pundit Jamie Redknapp hinted transfer distractions may be a factor:Like Vardy, Mahrez struggled to recapture his best at the KC Stadium, and theTelegraphmused the Algeria winger may yet complete a much-talked-about transfer to north London:Adama Diomande and Robert Snodgrass scored goals either side of Mahrez's interjection from the 12-yard spot, and the Tigers ignited their season in dream fashion against the Foxes.Hull caretaker manager Mike Phelan could hardly have asked for a better result in his first Premier League match at the club's helm, giving the top-flight new boys their ideal return to England's elite.
