Published by Bleacher Report on Sun, 14 Aug 2016

Saturday at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games was dominated by medal competitions in swimming and track and field, and the festivities did not disappoint as Michael Phelps, Simone Manuel and Jamaican sprinters Elaine Thompson and Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce were all in action. With Mo Farah seeking to defend his 10,000-meter title and women's tennis taking shape in the primetime spotlight, there was plenty to keep track of as the evening unfolded. With the day's action in the books, here's an overview of the latest medal count, which features the United States in the top spot and China at No. 2:On Saturday, everything started with Phelps. The most decorated Olympian in history took to the pool in the men's 4x100-meter medley relay for his final event, and a superlative display during his butterfly leg propelled a team that featured Nathan Adrian, Ryan Murphy and Cody Miller to gold.Adrian brought it home in the freestyle leg, while Murphy and Miller specialized in the backstroke and breaststroke, respectively.Following the gold-medal performance, Phelps now owns 28 medals total and 23 golds as he gets ready to swim off into the sunset:Fellow American swimmer Missy Franklin congratulated the men's 4x100-meter team on their victory shortly after the women's 4x100-meter medley relay team took home gold thanks to Dana Vollmer and Manuel:That win also proved to be historic, as it gave the United States its 1,000th Olympic gold medal, per Team USA on Twitter:Speaking of Manuel, the 20-year-old breakout star secured two medals on Saturday night. Not only did she anchor the medley relay to a gold, but she captured silver in the 50-meter splash-and-dash freestyle just behind Denmark's Pernille Blume, per NBC Olympics on Twitter:On the track, it was Great Britain's Farah who starred in early action in the 10,000 meters as he held off sterling challenges from Kenya's Paul Kipngetich Tanui and Ethiopia'sTamirat Tola despite stumbling during the opening stages of the competition.NBC Olympics provided a breakdown of Farah's stumble and ensuing gold medal kick down the back stretch:Later on, the women's 100-meter dash provided the day's biggest upset. While Thompson received plenty of hype as the Jamaican sprinting superstar of the future, her arrival wasn't expected quite this early. However, she pulled off the improbable and took down two-time defending gold medalist Shelly-Ann Fraser-Prycewho came away with bronze.NBC Olympics offered a unique look at how the runners crossed the finish line during Thompson's triumphant run:Thompson's win ensured that a Jamaican finished in first place in the 100 meters for a third year running, and it marked the seventh straight year in which a Jamaican woman medaled. Superstar Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt took to Twitter and congratulated both women on their accomplishments:And while track and field and swimming headlined the day's medal events, Monica Puig broke through with a gold medal milestone of epic proportions when she defeated Germany's Angelique Kerber in the women's singles final, 6-4, 4-6, 6-1.Puig's gold represented the first for Puerto Rico inanysport, and it produced an elated reaction from actor Lin-Manuel Miranda:"I know the country really appreciates this, and I really wanted to give this victory to them," Puig said, according to the New York Times' Christopher Clarey. "And the way I did it tonight, I wouldnt want it any other way."The spotlight will be on Andy Murray and Juan Martin Del Potro in the men's singles gold medal tennis match on Sunday.Elsewhere, Bolt will seek to earn his third straight gold medal in the 100-meter dash with American Justin Gatlin breathing down his neck. The day's action will also be highlighted by the men's individual floor exercise and women's vault finals in gymnastics.
