Bangladesh tries to move wayward elephant to safari park

NEW DELHI (AP) ' Wildlife officials are trying to bring an elephant to a safari park outside Bangladesh's capital after it was carried from India to Bangladesh by raging floodwaters and became stuck in a swampy area.Floodwaters carried the elephant thousands of kilometers (miles) from upstream India, before it found itself trapped in a swamp in Bangladesh's Jamalpur district some three weeks ago.Tapan Kumar Dey, a retired forest conservator, said wildlife workers tranquilized the elephant Sunday to bring it closer to a highway to truck it to the safari park outside Dhaka.Indian wildlife authorities abandoned a plan to send the elephant back to India because it was unlikely to be welcomed by its herd.Heavy downpours have flooded vast swaths of eastern India since monsoon rains began in June.Join the conversation about this story
