He struggled out of the gate in 2015, throwing six touchdowns and five interceptions in eight games before losing his starting job to Gabbert.The 49ers later placed Kaepernick on injured reservedue to a shoulder injury that required surgery. He also had procedures done on his right thumb and left knee during the offseason that left his timetable to return uncertain.Kelly did not tip his hand at any point during the summer about who his starting quarterback would be. Gabbert ended 2015 with some momentum, throwing 10 touchdowns and completing 63.1 percent of his passes.There's no denying that Kaepernick's raw talents are vastly superior to Gabbert's, but his inability to stay healthy now combined with his erratic play make him difficult to depend on for a team that needs to assess its roster constantly to determine the best 53-man group in 2016.
