Olympic Track and Field 2016: Women's Triple-Jump Medal Winners, Scores, Results

Published by Bleacher Report on Mon, 15 Aug 2016

Colombia'sCaterine Ibarguen was so dominant during Sunday's women's triple-jump final at the 2016Olympics in Rio de Janeiro that shewas the only competitor to surpass 15 metersand she did so twice.Ibarguen captured the gold medal, whileVenezuela's Yulimar Rojas (14.98 meters) won silver, andKazakhstan'sOlga Rypakova took home bronze (14.74 meters). Here's a look at the results, courtesy of the Rio Games' official website:The United States' only representative in Sunday's final was Keturah Orji, who advanced in the 12th and final spot with a 14.08-meter effort in Saturday's qualifying. However, she looked ready for the moment early Sunday with an initial jump of 14.71 meters to take a quick lead. Not to be outdone, Rypakova, the defendingOlympic gold medalist, responded with a jump of 14.73 meters to set the standard. That mark held until Ibarguen, the reigningworld champion and 2012 silver medalist, soared to a tally of 15.03 meters. She set the bar at Saturday's qualifying as well with a mark of 14.52 meters in a single attempt and built on her momentum. While Ibarguen was the best performer in qualifying, she wasn't the only notable name who impressed Saturday. Rypakova and indoor bronze medalist Paraskevi Papahristou (Greece) also qualified with jumps of 14.39 meters and 14.43 meters, respectively.According toIAAF.org, World Championships silver medalist HannaKnyazyeva-Minenko "had to keep her cool" in qualifying because she committed two fouls and needed to come through on her final jump. She did just with a 14.20-meter effort to earn a spot in Sunday's final.Still,Knyazyeva-Minenko's best score Sunday was 14.68 meters, which was good enough for only fifth place.Elsewhere,Orji lost her podium position after Rojas delivered on her third and final attempt with a distance of 14.87 meters. The top eight through three attempts were granted the opportunity to try three more times, and Rojas built on her mark on attempt No. 4. She finished with 14.98 meters, but Ibarguen overshadowed her again with a mark of 15.17 meters on her fourth try. Chris Chavez ofSports Illustratedwas ready to give the Colombian the gold after the showing:Orji could not build on her initial attempt, but Rypakova cemented her grip on the bronze with a fifth mark of 14.74 meters. From there, every final attempt for the competitors fell short of Ibarguen's 15.17 meters. Rojas came close at 14.95 meters, which was the third time she finished at 14.87 or above in a consistent performance. The gold medalist took her sixth attempt just for good measure, coming in at 14.80 meters. She had already done more than enough for gold, and it equated to more of a victory lap than anything else.
