Olympic Medals 2016: Tracking Monday Winners, Results and Final Tally

Published by Bleacher Report on Mon, 15 Aug 2016

The eyes of the world turn from the pools to the tracks Monday at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.About two weeks into the Games, it's all about the fastest people in the world. The Monday slate trots out events such as the men's 800-meter final with the pole vault mixed in for good measure. For those who want to track medal events on Monday, Rio's official website has it covered here. Below is an ever-updating table that monitors the final tally:Let's take a look at some of the notable results from early Monday action as well as what to watch later in the day.Notable Early Monday ResultsMarathon Swimming: Women's 10-KilometerThe intro wasn't meant to suggest swimming was entirely off the schedule.Far from it, in fact. The Netherlands' Sharon van Rouwendaal seized one of the first medals of Monday's action, besting Italy's Rachele Bruni (silver) and Brazil's Poliana Okimoto (bronze) in one of the Olympics' most grueling tests of endurance.Paul Newsome of Swim Smooth put it best:Not only did van Rouwendaal best the field and secure the fifth gold for Netherlands, but she did so in epic fashion, turning on the jets over the second portion of the race for a come-from-behind victory. It set the tone for the rest of the day quite well. Women's Hammer Throw FinalIt didn't take long for a world record to fall Monday.Poland's Anita Wlodarczyk overwrote her own name in the history books, seizing the gold with a throw of 82.29 meters and distancing herself from everyone else in the process. Not impressed' Wlodarczyk's throw was more than five meters greater than silver medalist Zhang Wenxiu of China (76.75) and well above bronze medalist Sophie Hitchon of Great Britain (74.54).Wlodarczyk stole the show as expected, especially after tossing the longest throw in qualifying history. But Hitchon's accomplishments also deserve praise, as BBC Sport pointed out:The medalists in this event lived up to the hype and kept the epic tone of the day's proceedings moving, to say the least. Late Events to WatchMen's 800-Meter FinalKenyas David Rudisha isn't Usain Bolt (who is'), but he's worth just as much attention since he's the defending champion in the men's 800-meter final.Rudisha crushed it in London back in 2012, captivating an international audience on the way to winning gold and setting a new world record. As theDaily Mail's Oliver Holt indicated, Rudisha is one of the best people to cheer for in Rio:Having world-class speed helps, as does a strong field. Rudisha's compatriots, Alfred Kipketer and Ferguson CheruiyotRotich, actually bested him in the Olympic trials, so it will be interesting to see if either name steals his crown in a bit of friendly competition.Other capable challengers persist too, such as the United States' Boris Berian and Canadas Brandon McBride.Women's 400-Meter FinalGood luck figuring out the favorite in this eventjust sit back and enjoy the show instead. There's a reason this is one of the last medal events on the day. The Bahamas Shaunae Miller gave a strong showing in London, but the United States trots out superstar Allyson Felix. As Yahoo Sports' Jeff Passan pointed out, Felix won the qualifiers and now seeks an eye-popping fifth medal:I felt comfortable, Felix said, according to USA Today's Paul Myerberg. Im just excited to get that first one under my belt. One of the United States' most decorated Olympians seems to have put her ankle injury fully behind her now, though a deep field including Americans Phyllis Francis and Natasha Hastings will also challenge in the event.Expect a close, debated affair with a deserving winner.
