Olympic 2016 Results: Monday's Medal Winners, Highlights for Each Event

Published by Bleacher Report on Tue, 16 Aug 2016

A little bit of rain wasn't enough to keep plenty of medals from being doled out on Day 10 of the 2016 Rio Olympic Games.Track and field events experienced a bit of a delay due to inclement weather in Rio, but the show eventually went on, as the day featured competition in gymnastics, wrestling, boxing and track.Overall, it was a somewhat quiet day for the United States. Laurie Hernandez, Simone Biles and Emma Coburn were the only American medalists early in the day, before track took center stage in the evening.Meanwhile it was a strong day for Russia. The nation did what it could to close the gap between itself and third-place Great Britain. Here's a live look at how each nation is doing in the overall medal count:Medals were handed out on Monday across several different sports. Here's a complete rundown of the medals from Day 10: Simone Biles Misses Gold, Still Joins Elite ClubSimone Biles has been one of the United States' breakout stars in these Games, and that trend continued on Day 10 on the balance beam. With gold medals in tow in the vault, individual and team all-around, Biles' quest to go five-for-five for gold medals in her event was one of the most intriguing storylines of the day. Unfortunately, a slip cost her valuable points, and she ended up with a bronze medal on the balance beam.Still, finding the podium after a mistake like that is a testament to just how great Biles is.Yes. Shes human, said Aimee Boorman, the U.S. Olympic team coach, per Jo-Ann Barnas of the U.S. Gymnastics Team's official site. But I dont know how she made that save because both of her feet were coming off the beam. So I was pretty impressed with that; that took super human power. So I see it as a triumph. She won a bronze medal on beam at the Olympics. Thats huge, and she should be proud of that.Biles' teammate Laurie Hernandez finished with the silver medal, while Sanne Wevers of Netherlands won the event.Despite the minor disappointment for Biles, she still did something that few American gymnasts have accomplished, per ESPN Stats & Info:The event was a perfect example of just how small the margin for error is in Olympic gymnastics. Despite the adversity, Biles still increased her legacy. The 19-year-old will have one more opportunity to medal on August 16 with her floor exercise routine. Russia Has Big Day in Combat SportsMedal rounds in boxing and wrestling continued on Day 10, and that was great news for Russia.Russian Evgeny Tishchenko won a controversial decision over Vassiliy Levit. The Rio crowd booed the 25-year-old after the decision was announced, as Levit appeared to win two, if not all three, rounds. Dan Rafael of ESPN took to Twitter to chime in on the judging:The Russians got a less controversial win in the 85kg Greco-Roman wrestling final. DavitChakvetadze scored nine-straight points against 2015 world champion ZhanBeleniuk to take a 9-2 victory.Russian wrestling also made an appearance on the medal stand in the 130kg class, withSergey Semenov earning a bronze medal.Denis Ablyazin also had a big day for the nation in gymnastics with a bronze medal on the rings and a silver medal in the vault. Clayton Murphy and Allyson Felix Finish Night Strong for United StatesThe men's 800-meter race has not generally been a strong suit for the United States, but that might be changing. That's because Clayton Murphy became the first American to medal in the event since 1992, per ESPN Stats & Info:David Rudisha of Kenya won the event for his second-consecutive Olympic gold medal in the race, but at just 21 years old, Murphy is exceptionally young for an American track medalist, as noted by Nick Zaccardi of NBC Olympic Talk:With Murphy showing this much promise this early in his career, the United States just might have a threat in this event for years to come.Much like Simone Biles, Allyson Felix came just short of doing something incredible, but had to settle for excellence instead. She was narrowly defeated by Shaunae Miller when Miller dived for the finished line in the 400 meters; however, she still grasped a little bit of history, according to Paul Carr of ESPN:Winning a fifth Olympic gold medal would have been special, but adding a seventh Olympic medal is a great consolation prize. Especially when you consider it's the first time she's earned a medal in the 400-meter race at the Olympic level.Although neither were able to capture gold, both Felix and Murphy ended the night on a positive note for the United States.
