Western and Southern Open 2016: Tuesday Tennis Scores, Results, Latest Schedule

Published by Bleacher Report on Wed, 17 Aug 2016

The 2016 Western & Southern Open continued Tuesday in Mason, Ohio, with a handful of marquee stars taking the court for the first time.Stan Wawrinka made his return after skipping out on the Olympics. Gael Monfils, John Isner and David Goffin were among the notable names in action in men's singles play. In the women's singles draw, 15th-seeded Karolina Pliskova kicked off her tournament.Below is a brief recap for Tuesday's play and a look ahead to Wednesday. Tuesday Results Tuesday RecapThe men's draw provided few surprises. Goffin, Monfils, Richard Gasquet and Feliciano Lopez all advanced, with Gasquet the only one of the four failing to win in straight sets.Wawrinka dropped the first set 2-6 to American qualifier Jared Donaldson but opened a 3-0 lead in the second before tournament officials suspended play for the night. The No. 2 seed had a dreadful start, committing 16 unforced errors and allowing four break-point opportunities in the first set alone, per TennisTV. Wawrinka righted the ship in the second, though. A long break could work in Donaldson's benefit, since it halts the momentum Wawrinka began building Tuesday night.Isner rode his big serve to a straight-sets victory over Fabio Fognini. The 31-year-old won 82 percent of his first-service points and picked up 12 aces. Making matters worse for Fognini, he was suffering from a blister on his foot in the second set, per TennisTV:Coming off a run to the Rogers Open semifinals and the 2016 Olympic quarterfinals, Monfils got his Western & Southern Open started in strong fashion with a win over Pablo Carreno Busta. TennisNow.com's Chris Oddo likes seeing the Frenchman displaying some consistency across multiple events:Eugenie Bouchard suffered another setback in a largely forgettable 2016. The 2014 Wimbledon finalist lost to Barbora Strycova in straight sets, 4-6, 6-0. Bouchard struggled on serve, committing four double-faults and winning just 52 percent of her first-service points.Down 0-2 in the second set, the 22-year-old Canadian double-faulted to give Strycova the game, which essentially sealed her fate.Pliskova only needed 72 minutes to put Jelena Ostapenko away and be the first player to punch her ticket to the third round. The match was delayed for inclement weather in Mason. After her win, Pliskova said she thought she benefited from the court conditions following the day."The conditions here are pretty fast, so it's good for me for the serve, the return, and overall for my aggressive game," she said, per the WTA's official site. "So I'm really happy that it's working. Really happy with the way I closed the match today." Wednesday ScheduleGarbine Muguruza was originally set to face Coco Vandeweghe on Tuesday, but weather delays forced their match back another day. Muguruza hasn't advanced past the second round of the U.S. Open in three tries, and making a deep run in Mason could be a good way for the 22-year-old to build some confidence ahead of the Grand Slam.Olympic silver medalist Angelique Kerber will take on the winner of the first-round match between Kateryna Bondarenko and Kristina Mladenovic. Mladenovic took the first set in a tiebreak and is 1-0 ahead in the second.Kerber will be motivated in Mason after exiting in the first round of last year's event. She's seemingly back to her best, though, after a rough 2015, so she shouldn't have much trouble getting to the third round no matter who she plays.Fresh off his loss to Kei Nishikori in the bronze-medal match at the 2016 Olympics, Rafael Nadal is back on the ATP World Tour. The 2013 Western & Southern Open champion will be playing in just his second tournament since the French Open in May.Since winning the 2013 U.S. Open, Nadal missed the 2014 edition and lost in the third round last year. Playing in Mason will be a nice way for him to get back into top form on hard court. Should he falter against Pablo Cuevas, though, it could be a worrying sign for his chances in Flushing Meadows, New York.
