Published by Business Insider on Wed, 17 Aug 2016

North Korea is hosting its first ever beer festival in the city of Pyongyang. The 20-day long event is taking place on the banks of the Taedong river in a floating restaurant and is an opportunity for drinkers to sample the country's finest beverages.Seven local beers are available to try, but Taedonggang ' the country's most popular beer ' is the festival's main attraction.TheTaedonggang brewery was built under the rule of former leader Kim Jong-il in 2002 from the remnants of a decommissioned brewery in Britain whose parts were flown over to Pyongyang.Video footage from several news agencies offers a surreal glimpse into the festival, wherenibbles and tipples help North Koreans forget their country's troubles as propaganda plays throughout on large screens.During the opening address, the director of North Korea's General Bureau of Public Service, Choe Yong Nam, reminded attendees of the importance of this event. 'It shows the superiority and vitality of our own-style socialist system, which is all about the people," he said.Food and snacks are provided at the festival. Just look at these delicious looking nuts and edamame beans. There's also a full menu offering fried chicken, roasted mutton, and other North Korean delicacies.Instagram Embed:http://instagram.com/p/BJAvnSZAHhn/embed/Width: 658pxSee the rest of the story at Business Insider
